History of Great Warley in 1863 Whites Directory

Great Warley 1863 Whites Directory

WARLEY (GREAT) is a long scattered village, from 2 to 8 miles S. of Brentwood, and its parish increased its population from 696 souls in 1841, to 952 in 1851, and to 1215 in 1861. It contains 2663A. 2R. lP. of land, having a heavy soil on a clay bottom, and giving rise to two sources of the rivulet which flows to Purfleet. It includes Warley Street, Cley Tye, and Warley Common, and is fertile and well cultivated. The surface is picturesquely undulated, and the view from Warley Gap is one of the most extensive in the county. Lord Headley (a Scotch peer) is lord of the manor, which belonged to the Abbess of Barking before the Conquest, and afterwards to the Gonsons, Evelyns, and Harts. One of the latter sold it in 1669, to Rowland Winne, an ancestor of the present owner. S. R. G. Francis, Esq., owns Warley Franks, and other parts of the parish belong to St. Thomas's Hospital, Mr. John Cross, and several other proprietors. The copyholds are subject to arbitrary fines. Great Warley Place is the seat of Fredk. Francis, Esq.; and Warley House, sometimes called Hill House, is the seat of the Rev. J. F. H. English, LL.D. The Parish Church (St. Mary,) is a small ancient fabric, but it was restored in 1858, when a new chancel and tower were erected. The rectory, valued in. K.B. at £14, and now at .£404, is in the patronage of the Master and Fellows of St. John's College, Cambridge, and incumbency of the: Rev. H. Robinson, D.D., who has & good residence and 14A. of glebe. The tithes were commuted in 1838, for £523 per annum., CHRIST CHURCH, at the north end of Warley parish, about 1 1/2 mile S.W. of Brentwood, is a district church for the adjacent parts of Great Warley, South Weald, and:Shenfield parishes. It is a neat fabric, and was erected, with a parsonage and school, in 18S4-5, by subscription. The benefice is a perpetual curacy, valued at £135 per annum, arising chiefly from the endowment of Miss Clay. The patronage is in Trustees, and the Rev. T. H. Bunbury, B.A., is the incumbent. Near Christ Church is Warley Cemetery, which was opened in 1850, and contains about two acres. Half of it (and one of the two chapels) is consecrated. It has cost about £1300,borrowed by the Burial Board.

I get hundreds of emails every day, fortunately most 'spam mails' are deleted by my mail scan settings. The final emails are delivered to various email addresses, and replying to these are not always successful. If you do not hear from me in a timely fashion, please feel free to email again, I do not mind! This is a pure PUBS history site, I doubt if I know where the PUBS are NOW, but try the site for where they were a hundred years ago, again enjoy!
